about

The album "Achinoam Nini and Gil Dor , Live in Concert" is a faithful documentation of my first period of work with Gil Dor, which began with a duet concert in a festival in Tel Aviv's "Cinemateque" called "Jazz, Movies and Videotape", Feb.8, 1990 .This concert, attended by 120 curious people (we were utterly unknown), included specially arranged cover versions of old standard tunes ("Imagination", "You are Too Beautiful", "Masquerade", "'Freight Trane"," We?ll Be Together Again".), and original arrangements of a variety of songs we love, in Hebrew and English, like "Drive My Car" (Beatles), "Material Girl" (Madonna),"Shir HaYakinton "(Rivka Gvili) and "Yalda Im Tzamot" (Gershon Prensky). In addition, our show had a "creator's corner" for songs penned by the aspiring young songstress (yours truly). It included, at first, only two songs: "Eyes of Rain", and 'She Went to the River". Later, that corner grew to become an entire room, with songs like "Uri", "Mishaela" and "Eye Opener" its permanent inhabitants.

These duet concerts continued uninterrupted, and gradually became more and more popular in their own eccentric undergroundish way, until the Gulf War suddenly erupted. We were forced, sadly, to discontinue our performances until further notice. So as not to lose our minds, we recorded a wild satirical version of the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love"(dedicated to the Emir of Kuwait), and an emotional rendition of "Ave Maria" (Bach/Gunaud) with original lyrics, a personal prayer for peace. We put both these songs on cassettes and gave them out as gifts to the soldiers manning the "Patriot" missiles in Israel. "Ave Maria" was later to find its way to the album "Noa", and change our lives by getting us invited to sing for the Pope and 100,000 people at the Vatican, but that?s a different story

Anyway, we were getting really impatient with the war, like everyone in Israel, and could no longer delay our plan of recording a live concert with the intent of releasing our first album. We decided to plan a date, regardless of the war, invite a few friends and family members to our favorite concert venue, "Tzavta" Tel-aviv(a cult institution in Israel), and play a gig, no matter what. At the time it was forbidden under law to have any sort of public gathering for safety reasons (remember those scud missiles?), so we had no choice. And then, lo and behold - a small miracle! That very evening it was announced that the war was officially over. Hurray! And on the eve of "Purim"! (a very happy Jewish holiday). What a celebration! "Tzavta" was packed, the gig was wonderful, Guy Yaffe (our incredible sound engineer) did a great job, and our first album was on its way.

This was a very daring album for us, virtually production-free, primal, naive and wide open. It was our first declaration of taste and sensitivity. Today, its a bit hard for us to believe we ever sounded like that, but it is full of love and magic.

Translation by Noa:

Who knows what is in her eyes?
Grey clouds disperse in the four winds
A dry riverbed overflows
And the horizon opens wide

Up to the heaven she turns her eyes
Searching, diving in to the chilly blue
Floating in the air
Touching the pure golden light
That glimmers in her hair

Mishaela, what do you see?
What is it in your heart
That greets the desolate silence with such
Laughter?

It is one rainbow in the east, she says
It is all I need

What more could I want?
It is all that I need
Track Name: I Will
Lyrics: P. McCartney
Music: J. Lennon

Who knows how long Ive loved you?
You know I love you still
I would wait a lonely life-time
If you want me to, I will

And if I ever met you
I did not catch your name
But it doesn't really matter
Cause I love you all the same

I will love you forever and forever
Love you with all my heart
Love you whenever were together
Love you when were apart

And now, at last, I've found you
Your song will fill the air
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
Cause the things you do endear you to me
Oh, you know I will,

I will
Track Name: Material Girl
Lyrics: B. Bans
Music: P. Brown

Some boys kiss me,
Some boys hug me,
I think they're ok
If they don't give me copper pennies
I just walk away

Some boys beg and some boys plead
But they don't see the light
Only the boy with the
Cold harsh cash
Is always Mr. Right

We are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Some boys moan and some boys groan
And that's alright with me
If they cant raise my interest,
Then I have to let them be.
Some boys cry and some boys die
But I don't let them play
Only boys that save their pennies
Make my rainy day!

We are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Boys may come
And boys may go
And that's alright you see
Experience had made me rich
And they're after me!

Were living in a material world
And I am a material girl
Track Name: She Went To The River
Lyrics & music: Achinoam Nini (Noa)

She went to the river,
She never thought twice
She went to the river,
The river of ice
Slowly she removed the blouse of silk
From her back
Carefully undid her skirt
And let it fall unwrapped

She cut with her fingers,
The cold river sighed
She wanted the water
The water inside
She walked to the center,
Unbraided her hair
Stepped out of her panties
And left her breast bare

Stretched out on the ice
She dug into it slowly,
Methodically punching
The half frozen floor
The blood from her fingers
Helped warm them, but only
Until it froze over a moment,
No more
No more

He watched from the tower,
He saw her below
Her physical power would melt
Like the snow
But not so the power
Of crystal decision
The lock of the mind
In undaunting precision

On the window,
A flower he'd bought to her
Bought, but forgotten to water

The night rolled in slowly,
But did not bring sleep
Her opening was only a few
Inches deep
But as she pressed her head

Down to the unyielding shell
She could hear the water
Almost well

Morning crept in cautiously,
Fearing what it'd find
A ring of clothes around on
Opening of the mind
And the water humming
For beneath
She is mine
And the water humming
For beneath
She is mine

She is mine
Track Name: For Father
Lyrics & Music: G. Prinsky
Translated by Noa

I remember years ago
A little girl with her laughter
From high up on on your shoulders you would tell
Me stories,
And sing to me softly

Once I had a little girl
With two braids swinging on her back
When she undid her thick black braids
My heart would also come undone

In the meadow, I unraveled them
Friendly old moon smiled down on us
But in the fall, shed shed them all
To the autumn of our souls

In the meadow, I unraveled them
Friendly old moon smiled down on us

Once I had a little girl
With two braids swinging on her back
She has gone, this little girl
And taken spring away with her

Now that same girl stands before you
Long black hair caped over her shoulders
Stage lights shine
And in my mind
I send a song out to you

Once I had a little girl
With two braids swinging on her back
But autumns past
And she will laugh
Fall is all but gone away
A lovely spring
Begins
Today
Track Name: Imagination
Lyrics: J. Burke
Music: J. Van Heusen

Imagination is funny
It makes a cloudy day sunny
Makes a bee think of honey
Just as I think of you
Imagination is lazy
Your whole perspective gates hazy
Has you askin a daisy what to do
What to do

Have you ever felt a gentle touch
And then a kiss
And then, and then
Find its not only your imagination
Again
Oh, well
Imagination is silly
I go around all willy nilly
For example I go around wanting you
And yet I can't imagine that
You'd want me too
And yet I can't imagine that
You'd want
Me
Too

Track Name: You Are Too Beautiful
Lyrics: Hart
Music: Bodgers

You are too beautiful, my dear,
To be true
And I am a fool for beauty
Fooled by the feeling that
Because I had found you,
I could have bound you too

You are too beautiful
For one man alone,
For one lucky fool to be with,
When there are other men
With eyes of their own
To see with

Love does not stand sharing
Not if you care.
Have you been comparing
My every kiss with theirs?

If on the other hand I'm faithful
To you
Its not through a sense of duty
You are too beautiful,
And I am a fool for beauty

Translation by Noa:

I wish I had a son
A little boy
Bright, with black curly hair
I would take his hand in mine
And stroll slowly, slowly
Through the garden
Little boy

Uri, I'd call him
My Uri!
How gentle and clear this tiny name
A glimmer of joy
For my little boy,
Uri, I'd call him
Uri, I'd call

But I still bitter as Rachel
I am still praying as Hannah in Shiloh,
I am still waiting for him.
I will
Wait
Track Name: Drive My Car
Lyrics: P. McCartney
Music: J. Lennon

Asked a girl what she wanted to be
She told me: baby cant you see?
I wanna be famous, star of the screen
But you can do something in between
Bay, you can drive my car
Honeys gonna be a star
Baby, you can drive my car
Baby, I love you
Told that girl my prospects were good
She told me: baby that's understood
Working for pennies is all very fine
But I can show you a better time
Baby, you can drive my car
Honeys gonna be a star
Baby, you can drive my car
Baby, I love you
Told that girl I could start right away
She told me: baby, got something to say
Ain't got no car, and it's breaking my heart
But I got myself a driver
And that's a start

Baby.

Translation by Noa:

Night-time, night-time,
The moon is looking
At our little garden below

The blossoming hyacinth
In our garden abounds
Night-time,
The moon is looking down

And the moon turns to the clouds and says:
Give a little drop of water to the flower beds!
So the hyacinth can bloom
In our garden, 'neath the moon
Night-time
The moon is looking down

The drops came down, pattered on my pane,
Quenched the thirst of all the flowers
Longing for the rain
Now the hyacinth can grow
Lovely flowers it will show,
Night-time
The moon is looking down

Good night
Track Name: Paranoia
Lyrics: Achinoam Nini (Noa), Ron Mizrachy, Gil Dor
Music: Achinoam Nini (Noa)

Translation by Noa:

Paranoia is a bad disease
Paranoia, has got me on my knees
I've got a patented pad-lock on my toilet door
Gonna hold that box of matches,
Just to make sure

It's really quiet, and that's as weird as hell
I'll check on Frieda, my neighbour, and see if she is well
I don't think twice,
Call Tel Aviv vice
And throw on a fashionable bulletproof vest

Underneath my bed, what horror lies in store?
A big green monster! Who is she looking for?!?

Axe in the door, the mailman rings
(Could it be the phone bill, and other awful things?)
They sent an ambulance to take old Frieda away
(She was really ga-ga*, for all I can say)
Paranoia, man, it's really mean
Why do I always make an awful scene?

Underneath my bed, what horror lies in store?
A big green monster! Who is he looking for?!?

Clean a windowpane, and I'm in pain
I see a cop and opt to take religion up again
Check every corner, I never miss a glance,
Any squeak or peeks enough to put me in a trance!
(Down town baby the girls wear blue
They wear black silk stocking and high heels too
And red-hot lipstick, it makes me afraid
To be simple and true,
So I learn it from you)

Finally, I quit, and then, who would believe?
I realized that paranoids had filled up Tel Aviv

I say, no need to fear,
Paranoia's dead.
Take a minute or an hour
With some shampoo in the shower,
Clear it all out of your head

* slang for crazy
